When Trump was elected, and almost five years later Bolsonaro in Brazil, I felt a sense of lost cause for the working class, as if they had taken a turn to the right.
After watching some interesting lectures by Alan Woods on YouTube, a qualitative change occurred in my mind. Now I understand that Trump’s election is more characterized by a vote for change and a break from the working class paradigm than anything else. The ruling classes are losing control of the situation, and workers are seeking solutions.
Of course, when social movements begin, they can be disoriented and make some mistakes. Trump, without a doubt, will not be a representative of the working class but of the richest 1% of the USA. He is a billionaire choosing other billionaires to guard the henhouse. The American people actually voted with the expectation of a change in the quality of their lives, not the continuation of the status quo.
Over time, they will clearly see that their situation will not change. As Marxists, we cannot say when this will happen, but we can say with certainty that the contradictions in the economy and politics will intensify. Some other solution will have to be chosen. In the meantime, ideology will be put into practice to try to subvert the will of the workers once again.
A true solution can only be achieved through the demolition of capitalism on a global level. And for that, we will need weapons. Literal weapons may seem the strongest, but we will need something even more powerful: a clearly Bolshevik party in the world. One that is capable of raising the banner of class struggle, not believing in reformists at all, and clearly proposing communism.
Seeing the scenario with a glass-half-full perspective, Trump’s election now seems more like a change related to the anger of the working class than anything else. And very likely, more events of this kind will happen in the future.
