A ceasefire between Hamas and Israel appears to have been signed today, bringing, at least temporarily, an end to the genocide carried out by the Israelis at the expense of the Palestinian people. However, since none of the contradictions of the capitalist system have been resolved, I suspect that the massacre will restart at some point in the future.
The scar left on Palestinian society will be enormous—thousands of children killed, nearly all hospital, educational, and basic infrastructure destroyed in the region. At this moment, young people must be harboring the greatest hatred in decades toward Israel and, without positive life prospects, will soon radicalize.
Another round of aggression will then begin. Israel, on the other hand, is unlikely to return all the territories it occupied during this latest military action. The latest news reports suggest the evacuation of only populated areas of the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, the wealth of the occupied areas, including natural gas reserves, agricultural land, and other vital resources, remains under Israeli control, further deepening the inequality and resentment in the region.
Moreover, it appears that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has a vested interest in maintaining chaos in the region to sustain his grip on power. By perpetuating a state of conflict, he can position himself as a “protector” against external threats, rallying nationalist sentiment and distracting from domestic issues, including legal troubles and political opposition. However, with the ceasefire in place, his popularity is likely to decline, as his political strategy thrives on conflict and fear.
This loss of public support could incentivize him to provoke or reignite tensions in the near future, further destabilizing the region. As a result, the fragile peace brought about by the ceasefire might be short-lived, with new rounds of aggression possibly driven by political calculations rather than genuine security concerns. The situation demands close observation to assess how these dynamics will unfold.
