AI image generation is something that is dominating social media. Personally, it gives me an impression of complete disconnection from reality. I do recognize the importance and relevance of this tool to create incredible and interesting things. One of them is the possibility for Tolkien fans to create small movies based on the author’s work. But how much of it is creativity? I believe it is as much as the creativity of a movie director.
But can we be proud of this generative content? It seems to me that’s not the case. AI doesn’t know it is creating something beautiful and doesn’t even understand what it is doing. In the case of the human process to create something beautiful, any stroke of a pencil has something related to the life of the author. If you consider that art is a result of an intense emotional process that encompasses the entire life of an artist, you can appreciate their work with more satisfaction. Let’s consider that it’s not just the individual being expressed but society as well, and you have a better picture of how to enjoy art. The artist isn’t born knowing what to do, and every step that shapes their personality is influenced by the complex social interactions where they live.
It seems not enough to have people adjusting their lives to show only a very well-prepared moment. Now, it has to have a touch of AI. Women are the more affected gender. If before AI, women needed to be almost perfect, now they definitely do. The amount of AI-generated images of women is incredible. Most likely, this is having a huge impact on their psyche. It’s even strange when you stop looking at Instagram models and go take a walk on the street with that perspective. I believe that males also have the same problem but to a lesser extent.
Political and economic opinions are also prevalent on these platforms. The menu is huge. If you want to be a Nazi or a conservative, there are plenty of options to consume. And this is all multiplied by money coming from think tanks around the world. Public opinion is being manipulated, and I’m not very sure if we have reached the limit yet. I suppose that reality will soon make these people put their feet on the ground again in the next few years. But until then, if we will have enough time to save the world, I don’t know what could happen!
These are some of the reasons I decided to leave social networks as much as possible. In fact, these are the reasons lots of people are leaving behind this incredible but messy instrument.
